Have you ever noticed a friend’s bad breath while talking with them? It’s possible that their bad breath wasn’t because they ate too much garlic at dinner the night before, but something a little more serious.

A condition called perio breathe is a problem with your gums that contributes to a bad odor in your mouth. How are gum disease and bad breath connected? What can you do to prevent both of these troubling oral issues?

The Symptoms of Gum Disease

Gum disease generally stems from poor oral hygiene, which is noted by Cleveland Clinic. It’s found more frequently in adults over age 30 and tends to affect men more than women. Some of the symptoms to look for are listed below. We strongly suggest that you make an appointment with our office or your dental professional if you are experiencing any of the signs or symptoms below. This will allow them to check your gum health for the following:

• Bleeding, swollen or tender gums

• Sensitive or loose teeth

• Receding gums or teeth that appear longer

• Pain when chewing or a misaligned bite

• Bad breath

In its early stages, known as gingivitis, the damage to your gums can be reversed. However, once you have developed the more serious form of gum disease known as Periodontitis, the breakdown of your gum tissue is irreversible.

What is the connection Between Periodontitis and Bad Breath?

Halitosis, known as bad breath is really caused by bacteria that live in the mouth. These bacteria break down the proteins and release a volatile sulfur compound (VSCs), which can have a really bad smell. Dental issues such as gum disease or infection can contribute to bad breath and make the issue worse.

A case study published in the Journal of Internation Society of Preventive & Community Dentistry stated that the majority of halitosis cases relate to gingivitis, periodontitis, or bacterial coating of the tongue. In fact, up to 80% of patients with some degree of gum disease also exhibited halitosis in the study.

What are some ways of preventing gum disease and perio issues?

Maintaining a consistent oral care routine will lower your risk of both gum disease and halitosis. Ensure that you follow these steps to keep your oral care in top shape.

• Brush your teeth at least twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste

• Floss once a day.

• See your dentist for regular checkups and ask about additional products to help control bacteria buildup in the mouth, such as mouth rinse.

As you are aware, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued warnings and precautions to Health-Care Providers Worldwide regarding Coronavirus.


We at Quasha Family Dental are taking every precaution necessary to limit the exposure of any virus within our office, and we ask that you help us by participating in these precautions.

COVID-19 Office Policy

1. Upon arrival please wait in your car and call us at 561-799-5558, our front desk will let you know when it’s your turn to come inside the office.

2. Please make sure you have filled out the new COVID-19 forms which can be found here: COVID-19 FORM

3. Upon entering the office please disinfect your hands with the provided hand sanitizer.

4. If using the restroom or exiting and reentering our office, we ask that you use the hand sanitizer provided upon reentry.

5. Please inform us if you are currently experiencing a fever, cough, or difficulty breathing.

6. Please note that we will be limiting social distance, including handshaking, as a means of decreasing possible transmission of Coronavirus (COVID-19).

7. Please inform us of any recent travel outside of the US to areas considered level 3 precaution by the CDC. This includes the following Countries: Italy, South Korea, Iran, and China ( As of March 5, 2020)

8. Please also inform us if you have recently traveled within the US.

9. A face mask or covering must be worn at all times while in the office. The doctor or office staff will guide you on when to remove it for treatment.

This simple daily act prevents bacteria and plaque from building up, which leads to cavities, tooth decay, and gum disease. In addition to a healthier mouth, fresher breath is another benefit to flossing your teeth.

Unfortunately, for many people, flossing is one of the most overlooked steps in routine oral health care. As a result, these patients are at an increased risk for gum infections that lead to gum disease and eventually tooth loss. To get the most out of flossing, you not only need to make sure that you are using the right type of floss for your smile, but also using the correct technique. Keep reading to learn more about the proper way to floss.

Choose the Right Dental Floss for You

The first step to proper flossing is selecting a floss that works best for your unique dental needs and preferences. Today, there are a variety of flosses and flossing aids from which to choose. These include:

Traditional string floss

String dental floss is available waxed or unwaxed, and is the most commonly used floss. Waxed floss is most often preferred as it slides easily between teeth and doesn’t fray as easily as unwaxed floss.

Dental tape

Dental tape is flatter and smoother than traditional floss. It can easily clean between small spaces, making it a good option for people who have a lot of crowding or who wear dental appliances, like bridges.

Floss picks

This type of flossing device holds the floss for you, which allows you to clean between your teeth with one hand. Although easier and more convenient to use than traditional floss, floss picks may not be as effective as regular floss, since they cannot reach many of the important angles to clean around the teeth. If you’re on the go or have dexterity problems, however, floss picks are a convenient option.

Floss threaders

A floss threader is a small needle-like tool that can be used to move the floss between tight spaces in your teeth. This type of floss aid is especially helpful if you wear dental appliances, braces or permanent retainers.

Oral irrigation devices

These motorized dental tools use a stream of pulsating water to remove food and plaque between the spaces of your teeth.

Technique Is Essential to Effective Flossing

To maintain healthy gums, make flossing a habit every day, at least once a day. If you are using regular string floss, your technique is very important. These tips can help you maximize the effectiveness of your flossing routine:

  1. Break off approximately 18 inches of floss.
  2. Wrap the strand of floss around your two pointer or middle fingers.
  3. Hold the floss in a C-shape around the tooth. Using a back-and-forth motion, gently work the floss between the natural curves of the teeth and against the sides of each tooth to effectively remove bacteria and food particles.
  4. Using a soft up-and-down sawing motion, move the floss beneath the gum lines. Be careful not to force the floss, as this can damage your delicate gum tissue and cause them to bleed.
  5. Repeat the entire process with all of your top and bottom teeth, and don’t forget the back teeth where food and plaque are easily trapped.
  6. Use a fresh section of floss as you move from tooth to tooth.
